I have a Mk2.5 2005 MX5. My garage told me last year that I would need to get the sills replaced and repaired before the next MOT which is due in October. In February I asked my garage for a quote for the work. They said for the replacement parts, labour, 3-4 days in the workshop using the dedicated welding bay, would cost £1200. Can anyone let me know whether this is a reasonable quote for a good job that will last please?

As these are hidden under covers they can have as many holes as swiss cheese and not get spotted during an MOT. The last thing you want to do is pay out big money on the sills and then find you have another big bill to pay for chassis rails. I presume you have a local garage that you trust which is good. However your best move would be to have your car examined by a real MX-5 specialist to find the full extent of the work needed. Even then it's difficult to know exactly how bad the sills are until the outer skin is cut away. Sometimes things aren't too bad inside but more often than not the worst damage is hidden. There are a few good specialists around the country. If you let us know roughly where you are in the country then I'm sure someone will point you in the right direction. There's also the head versus heart question. The head says spending a couple of grand on repairs that will only add maybe £500 to the value doesn't make sense. But if your heart says you have an attachment to the car you know that doing it right is the thing to do.

Hi Maxwell and welcome to mxfivers... I think that Roadie has summed things up spot on. It's difficult to predict how long repairs will last, it depends on the person doing it and how much rust is cut out.
I've seen some cheap repairs done to people's cars and after a while they're back chasing the rust around again.
If you do find a company that you're comfortable with maybe you could see some of their previous work.
One thing you could also ask for when the work is carried out is documented photographic evidence of the repair for future reference.

I live in Coventry. My garage are trustworthy but as you say, they are not specialists.
I bought my car for £2000 in 2018 and it hasn't really done a lot of miles since and I believe it has been mechanically well looked after as it responds well, better than my Mk2 before it. For the £2000 I paid for it, it doesn't owe me anything so £1200 feels like a fair price but I would to like to know what lies ahead to make a judgement on the next step.
I am attached to the car somewhat but as I had a Mk2 from new for 18 years until it deteriorated beyond help, I am wise to the issues and already have experienced "letting go". I regularly look at AutoTrader and Ebay to see what is being sold but wouldn't risk buying from there.
Beyond getting a specialist view on the condition of my car, I would like some recommendations on how to go about sourcing a potential replacement which is low-mileage and tidy condition. I love the cars I have driven and intend to stick with those models as I love the driving experience they offer.
I do see some well-advertised examples with loads of bumpf and a look at the MOT website shows there are no reported issues but working out whether they are worth the extra cash is impossible for me as I have no motor experience, I'm just a fan who has learnt things along the way.

Hi Max Check out my posts from May 2022 onwards. I had quite a lot of work done on my MK1. Far more rotten than first thought, but as you probably know, until they start poking around, it's hard to tell what is needed. 😎

Hi Maxwell, If you can get both sides repaired for £1200 that's a good deal.
My experience would urge you to expect the quote to rise once work commences.
The rear sills are triple skinned and can need some proper surgery which makes the price escalate. Honestly, expect to possibly pay £1200(+?) for each side.
Also, if the sills need repairing, how are the front chassis rails looking? Might be worth having a close look at them? 🤔

Hello, I've only just joined this forum so apologise for the "late" comment on this topic. Re. Sam Goodwin in Nuneaton. I have used this specialist for the last 15 years, travelling from Worcestershire for them to look after my very early Mk2. Now 26 years old, It has just passed its MOT again (with no advisories) and I consider that to be a credit to their knowledge and professionalism. Sam has now retired but his side-kick Steve Butler has now taken over the business. Sam and Steve are two extremely genuine people whose knowledge of the MX5 is vast - particular re the Mk1 and Mk2. Their pricing is also very reasonable. Deal with Steve and your car is in very good hands. Mike Dodman, Bromsgrove Worcs.
