Hi gang. I hope everyone has fair weather this bank holiday weekend. I wonder if I might pick the collective's brains on a question to do with oil filters please? I bought a genuine filter from Mazda but it differs from those I've had before. The part numbers are different and the design also differs. Old style box with part number New style box and part number. Difference between the filters (old on the bottom) They are similar but then perhaps an oil filter is an oil filter? I don't want to begin the job and find out that they're incompatible or the flow of oil is different etc. It could be that Mazda has redesigned the filters or has sourced them from an alternative supplier and the new one is a direct replacement. I'd still like to be sure. Any ideas anyone?

I bought a stock of filters from MX5 Parts a couple of years back (which I still have 3 on the shelf in my garage) and the part number on those is B6Y1-14-302A
Interesting to see that MX5 Parts quote the following.
"Please note that these are not the European sourced Genuine Mazda filters that are actually made by Mahle which have a "9A" on the end of the part number. These are the proper, original, Japanese filters that were used at the factory."
Looks like you have the Japanese genuine parts and not the European ones ?
The filters I have are identical to the "new" one in your pictures. If you've purchased the filters from a reputable source then I see no reason why you can't use it.

Thanks RS. I bought the filter from Pentagon Mazda in Lincoln. However, I gather they are experiencing staffing issues and with the box and filter not looking the same as the last time I bought one I was concerned that perhaps the fellow had picked up the wrong one. Not knowing much about how the oil gets in and out of the filter and with the hole density and alignment being different I didn't want any issues with fitting the wrong part. TOG's old and needs all the help she can get 😄 ( bit like me really). Thanks for your advice. I feel happier now 👍 Cheers, Guy

Slightly off topic but stick with me.
There was a recent post on the OC forum regarding a motor factor selling after market Mk2 air filters at about £1.40. The part numbers for the after market air filters are different on Mk1 and Mk2. This is the same on Halfords and MX5Parts websites, different filters for Mk1 and Mk2. However the genuine Mazda air filters on MX5Parts are the same for Mk1 and Mk2.

Interesting 🤔
Good to know Roadie, thanks 👍
Talking of air filters, I've treated TOG to a new K&N cone filter. Should be with me later this week. The one fitted now is quite black even after washing plus the rubber has begun to craze.
It'll be interesting to see if there's any difference.
