Hello everyone, This thread is to document the possible replacement of TOG's wiper and lighting stalks with alternatives. The heavy plastic arms are functional but not particularly elegant to my mind. I am hoping to replace them with something more slender, elegant (or old fashioned perhaps?), more in keeping with the era I am attempting to emulate. I'm in the process of taking a set of stalks apart to see if this project is feasible. My first snag and resultant cry for help is this How would you folk remove this pin?
It locates the arm into the plastic base but is enclosed at the back end. I don't have anything small enough to grab hold of the tip of the pin and pull it out unless I were to cut away some of the plastic. Alternatively, I could drill a hole into the back end but not sure about punching the dowel pin out
Thanks Jeff. I attempted to grip the end of the pin after opening out the area around it a bit but to no avail. In the end I drilled it out. If I need to refit this component I'll need to use a screw of somekind.
Another question for you fine folks. In the above image you might just be able to make out three wires. Black (earth?), light green and light green with a red line. These run to the light switch on the end of the stalk. Am I correct in thinking that I can use these to run to a new switch on my dashboard? I intend to use the indicators and full beams as they are (nice as that trafficator switch is 😉).
So, and please forgive my rudimentary knowledge, what we're saying is, the black wire goes to terminal #1, the light green wire goes to terminal #4 and the yellow wire with the red stripe goes to terminal #8, right? Now, if I want to add a tell tale lamp when the lights are on, is it simply a matter of connecting wires from the lamp terminals to this switch? If so, which terminals on the switch do I use and is there any need for a fuse of any kind?
To have a tell tale light come on with the sidelights you would connect one wire from the bulb to terminal 4 and the other to a permanent live connection via a fuse.
Alternatively you could wire a tell tale in series with one of the dashboard illumination lamps. Heater control panel or head unit might be the easy access. Wouldn't need an additional fuse that way.
Excellent, thanks. You never know, there might come a time when I'll get this sort of stuff 😀 (but don't hold your breath 🤭😉).
Okay, so, head unit illumination? Virtually as soon as I got TOG I whipped the head unit out. I did leave all of the loom in place though. Now from memory, there's a big bundle of multi-coloured wires back there. Do you think I'd be lucky enough that by selecting the right wires I could simply connect the tell tale's terminals to those wires? It can't be as simple as that, can it?
Just looked through the diagrams and out of luck on that one. Some head units have a sidelight feed to alter the illumination dependant on whether the lights are on or not.
However going back to plan A, there will be a fused permanent live 12v there. So one wire from the tell tale to terminal 4 on the switch, the other to the blue with red stripe on the head unit connector.
That's brilliant. Thanks Paul. I'm excited to give it a go. There's a bit to do with the stalks first. I believe the current metal part of the stalks are 8mm so I need to source either some chrome plated or stainless steel rod. Then I can bend and shape it to fit (hopefully). I've also dropped Luke at Formotiv a line to see if he fancies custom printing a pair of ends. I'll let everyone know more in due course. Once again, big thanks for the help 🙏
